moon and shadow grow
coyote—
little brother
wont be back
for the poison sky
for the poison water
this place has no mourners
only hush and broken stone
many wounds sleeps on the ground tonight
moon and shadow grow
“I saw the black wolf come— a shadow pressed against the pines come to take him on
he did not see me watching
stars
our brother’s eyes
mine are going blind
the wind is growing cold”
moss woman draws out the heat
licks the tip of the blade with her tongue
runs to the edge of the song and back
a smell like carrion
a blooming cacti moans
heleswa medicine
poultice of whatever is left
for
swollen collar bones
red as rabbits blood
bird woman still as slack tide
hears movement on the road
takes to the branches above them
shakes loose the biting things
leave us alone in our grief
our brother coyote is gone

Thank you Pretty Thunder for invite to write—“any line of mine yours to use”

Your poem feels less like a story and more like an ancient lament carried by wind and stone. I was especially moved by “this place has no mourners / only hush and broken stone.” That image holds so much grief without ever needing to explain it. Thank you for sharing such a haunting and deeply atmospheric piece.
